Annotation

Those who work or used to work with IBM Rational ClearQuest have obviously felt there are certain constraints in its capabilities related to visualization of activity planning through change requests (tasks, bug reports etc.). Though one can set up requests, which would show the task chain, dates, workload, etc., all this would be shown as a usual list of tasks. And in order to change something in several tasks, one should enter every task separately and fulfill a sequence of monotonous actions. This problem related to handling complex hierarchical tasks and plans can be easily solved by the GanttChart for ClearQuest.

GanttChart for ClearQuest is of practical interest for everyone who uses IBM Rational ClearQuest and finds its project management capabilities insufficient. Our module does not substitute the existing project management tools but adds operational slices to IBM Rational tools (perhaps, in the next versions we will manage to transfer most of MS Project functions into ClearQuest).
The module simplifies the management of the complex hierarchical tasks considerably. This allows releasing project managers from routine operations, thus letting them focus on their main tasks.

GanttChart for ClearQuest is a very flexible solution, which allows setting up any change requests with any dependencies and any nesting levels, providing fine-tuning of additional fields.

GanttChart for ClearQuest is the new generation module intended for concerted operation with IBM Rational ClearQuest Eclipse. All project management functions of the module become available in the standard menu of IBM ClearQuest immediately after installation.

The following are the fundamental capabilities of GanttChart for ClearQuest:

  • Cross-platform software. Our module is embedded into the Eclipse client of IBM Rational ClearQuest and works on different platforms: Windows and Unix.
  • No additional software will be required. Everything is provided by the single tool – the IBM Rational ClearQuest client. The exceptions are the functions of budgeting, resource distribution, and portfolio management.
  •  A single data source and real-time synchronization mode. The module provides the real status of project activities based on the latest changes in the IBM Rational ClearQuest system. This will not require any additional synchronization or duplication of data into any other project management software. All visualization is provided on a real-time basis.
  •  All functions of IBM Rational ClearQuest are accessed. Due to embedding the module into IBM Rational ClearQuest, the user has access both to planning using the Gantt diagram and to all functions of IBM Rational ClearQuest (building requests, reports, graphs, etc.) at the same time.

Benefits

Benefits for  project managers and administrators:

  • Analysis of the project status in real-time scale.
  • Agile correction of the project plan.
  • Opportunity to save the project manager’s time for replanning request groups (change and extension requests) especially within service-oriented approach, when a great number of requests require special attention every day.
  • Efficient distribution of resources.
  • On-the-fly transfer of requests from one state to another.
  • Shift of task and request groups (shift scheduled dates) in the drag-and-drop mode.

Benefits for project members:

  • Ability to see their own workload on the whole pool of requests at once (tasks, defects, requests, etc.).
  • Comfortable and conventional work with the task plan.

Testimonials

The GanttChart for ClearQuest tool has proved to be a very successful add-on for the ClearQuest system. It significantly simplifies the planning process in ClearQuest. Standard integration of IBM Rational ClearQuest and MS Project allows solving a number of same tasks as GanttChart solves, but with GanttChart, it is much more convenient to work with a large number of heterogeneous relations between change requests, including hierarchical and sequential relations. Besides, there is no need to use two tools at a time – a project manager can really do well with the only ClearQuest with GanttChart add-on installed.

Our experts have also benefited from this tool. The GanttChart's flexible settings allow configuring the necessary representation of a Gantt chart to be displayed. Every user has an opportunity to build “his own” Gantt chart, where he can see the set of tasks assigned to him, and every task can be highlighted with a necessary color depending on its status, which allows the user to organize his working time better. Besides, GanttChart is particularly flexible at creating a Gantt chart using any queries.

This solution is the result of efforts of both our specialists and our clients. The idea to create such a solution emerged in the result of close cooperation with our customers and deep understanding of their business problems. In most companies, which we have cooperated with, the planning horizon for tasks and works is measured in months and quarters, but not years. Project managers very often have to modify work schedules, update them, establish priorities, and set responsible persons. ClearQuest is a powerful tool that simplifies this process, but it has its limits. In ClearQuest, planning and representation of tasks is performed in a flat view, but all managers are used to using the Gantt chart for planning. Unfortunately, the standard ClearQuest package does not provide users with such an opportunity. GanttChart for ClearQuest allows managers to save a lot of time both for project or work/tasks planning and for exercising operational control over the project. In absolute terms, without using GanttChart, a manager spends about 12-16 minutes for rescheduling an average group of connected tasks. Using GanttChart for ClearQuest, the same operation takes 10-15 seconds. Thus, the usage of GanttChart for ClearQuest results in improvement of the manager’s efficiency and manageability of the whole project. We are greatly pleased that our contribution has been recognized by the IBM Corporation.

Former Rational sales specialist, IBM (2005-2007).

With the GanttChart module, my team has the opportunity to plan tasks for resolving change requests right after acceptance, with a single tool, without any intermediate steps. I recommend this tool as a rapid-planning extension to all teams, which use ClearQuest.

This is a usefull and successful solution allowing to simplify a life to ClearQuest users who It is a useful and successful solution that makes the life of the ClearQuest users who got used to work with Gantt charts much easier. Visualization of hierarchy and relationships of change requests of different types allows to accelerate the analysis of current tasks' status and make a right decision faster.

 Dmitry Lapygine,
Rational Technical Specialist, IBM EE/A, SWG Department.

The major advantage of the GanttChart tool is the ability to represent states of activities graphically. When you have a large number of activities, it is difficult to represent them visually and estimate them using the table view only. In such case, a chart is very helpful.
Another advantage is the possibility to modify terms of activities in a graphic view (i.e. in a chart) that simplifies updating data in ClearQuest.

Realization

Plug-in module for IBM Rational ClearQuest Eclipse.

Requirements

IBM Rational ClearQuest (any version starting from 7.0) installed.

Features

Display functions

  • Display of a calendar grid and a plan in a separate view of the ClearQuest client for Eclipse.
  • Display of a hierarchy and relationships between change requests in the form of summary tasks and execution sequence.
  • Display of a completion rate (in percentage) of every change request.
  • Display of an owner of every change request on a Gantt chart.
  • Display of planned shifts when editing a plan.
  • Display of shifts between the actual and planned dates.
  • Display of brief information about a task in the form of tooltips.
  • Display of a UML state diagram for every task (upon a command from the right-click menu).
  • Display of change requests based on executed queries. Allows displaying a plan of any ClearQuest change request execution based on the existing query. For example, for executing the "A" Change Request or Defect, a plan has been generated; also, plans were generated based on change requests "B" and "C". Pool of tasks for change requests execution has been generated.
  • A project manager can generate a query that displays controllable change requests. In this case, the module will display a list of active tasks for the aggregate of change requests, thus providing a complete plan with all owners.
  • This functionality allows managers to both control the tasks contents and compare the list of tasks with the list of change requests or defect.
  • Visualization of change requests using different color schemes depending on the completion rate and compliance with the schedule. Highlighting with colors allows differentiating tasks by statuses, for example: green – the task has been completed; yellow – the task is in progress; red – the task has not been not started and the planned start date is past due; crimson – the task is in progress but the planned finish date is past due; blue – a scheduled task; grey – a new unscheduled task
  • For composite change requests, splitting a Gantt chart into sections facilitates the analysis of tasks by separate requests in the plan.
  • Display upon double-click of a fully functional ClearQuest form where you can modify the state of a change request or edit a change request.
  • Display of the workload of an owner (or owners) based on a selected chart or by whole projects (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).
  • Custom display of fields in a chart (ID, Record Type, Headline and any other custom fields) (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).
  • Visualization of change history for a selected change request (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).

  • Group operations:
  • Selecting groups of tasks and performing aggregate modifications of planned dates (prolongation, changing execution dates).
  • Selecting related tasks and performing aggregate modifications of planned dates.
  • Modifying planned dates for child tasks in view of shifting the summary task within a Gantt chart.
  • Assigning owners for change requests from within a Gantt chart.
  • Possibility to cancel the last operation (Undo functionality).
  • Preview mode (developing a plan without saving changes to the ClearQuest database) allows saving drafts of a plan (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).
  • Creating new change requests from within a Gantt chart (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).
  • Creating links between an execution sequence and a change request hierarchy from within a Gantt chart (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).

Navigation

  • Navigating to the beginning of a plan to the first task.
  • Navigating to the end of a plan to the last task.
  • Navigating to the current date in a plan.
  • Selecting any date in a calendar plan and highlighting the aggregate of tasks to be executed on this date (the feature will be available in v. 1.4).

Additional features

  • Flexible configuration of functions.
